The business travel packing list
Business Travel, do it smart - Part 1
There's nothing worse than showing up for a business trip without something crucial.
Travel is stressful even if you are a seasoned traveler. Why not make it easier on yourself?
Using a packing list for every trip will set you up for success and make getting out the door a snap. Start ahead of time, as soon as you know you will be traveling, create your packing list. It can be basic to start, and eventually you can create a template, and you can use it again and again and again. I always think of items I want to bring when I'm doing something totally unrelated. So having an ongoing list is very helpful. This way, you have a capture spot for all your ideas, and you won't forget anything.
Now, let's get down to business on what you truly need for your trip. Over-packing and lugging stuff that you don't actually need is exhausting. Instead, first create an itinerary. Write down all the days you will be traveling, and what you will be doing on those days. If you have meetings, dinners, cocktail, parties, events, write it all out. Second, make categories for your packing list. Now that you have an idea of what you will be doing each day, identify the categories that you will need.
Typically, these are the ones I use: Toiletries, clothes and shoes, accessories, electronics and books, work items, travel documents, and last-minute items that you will want to pack just before you leave. Breaking the list into bite-sized categories makes this less overwhelming, and you're able to stay organized.
Third, review your daily routine. This is great when you are creating a template to use for multiple trips. When you can run through your morning and write out everything you need, you will be less likely to forget your deodorant, or your toothbrush. But also think through what you'll be doing for your work trip. Will you need business cards, or to present a report, or are you going to a networking event? This should all go on the packing list.
Fourth, pick outfits. This is helpful to keep your suitcase light. Go over your itinerary and identify the outfits you are going to need for each of your activities. And don't forget to check the weather. Making a list of outfits and only packing those items is a real game-changer in terms of avoiding anxiety. Once you know what you are wearing, it will be one less thing that you need to worry about on your trip, so that way, you can focus on the business at hand and why you're there in the first place. When you actually pack your bags, I suggest using packing cubes or rolling everything . It will keep your bag neat and organized.
